Campaign Finance Reform
Some great stuff on PBS NOW this evening about campaign finance reform. A discussion about "clean elections" in Arizona which are funded by public dollars collected from parking and speeding tickets and also by voluntary check-offs on state income tax forms. It then moved on to discuss proposition 89 in California which is another public funding of elections initiative. After that, they talked to some other folks who are working on campaign finance reform like "Just $6" which is a bi-partisan effort to get federal elections publically funded to get our government out of the hands of the lobbyists and corporations and allow our elected official to focus on getting the job of running the country done rather than constantly worrying about funding their reelection campaigns and to level the playing field for average Americans to have their voices heard in how this country is run rather than just the rich and powerful. The show finished off with a story about an 89 year-old woman who is walking across the country from Pasadena, CA to Washington, D.C. in support of campaign finance reform.
